Missing the electric energy of this past June’s epic World Pride celebration in NYC? JC’s Gayborhood has you covered – August is Jersey City’s Pride Month! There’s plenty of festivities and community events leading up to the main event – the JC LGBT Pride Festival on August 24. Here’s a sampling of just some of the amazing events going down;
The 2nd Annual Pride with Your Pup, August 11 from 2pm – 8pm. Corgi Spirits Distillery, 1 Distillery Drive
Bring your proud pooch along and dress him or her in your likeness! The winner of the Doggy-Owner lookalike contest will receive a $50 gift card and other special swag. There will be a a food truck, drink specials, DJ and live entertainment. Coolest of all, Corgi will be selling rainbow label vodka, with $2 from every bottle sold donated to the Hudson Pride Center here in Jersey City. Note: dogs are permitted in outdoor spaces only.
Drag Queen Story Time with Harmonica Sunbeam, Saturday, August 17 11am – 12pm. WORD, 123 Newark Ave.
This monthly event with the iconic Harmonica Sunbeam is a must for young readers and their grown- ups! Harmonica will read books with progressive messages of pride and inclusivity, along with leading participants in song between stories. A great way to catch an intimate glimpse of her creativity and charisma before her big gig as Mistress of Ceremonies on August 24.
What’s the Tea Drag Brunch, Saturday, August 24, 11:30 am – 3:00 pm. Talde, 8 Erie St.
Start your Pride partying early with a delicious craft cocktail and hearty brunch, while being entertained by the leggy lovelies Marti Gould Cummings and Izzy Uncut. Who knows what special guest queens will turn up? If you do know, please share the tea! Can’t think of a more festive way to start off the big day…
The 19th Annual Jersey City LGBT Pride Festival, Saturday, August 24, 1:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Newark Ave. Pedestrian Plaza.
With Ms. Sunbeam presiding over the event, the day-long event will feature the multi-talented, massively likeable Rupaul’s Drag Race alum Jiggly Caliente as music headliner. Her body positive message and catchy tunes are going to be fire! She’ll be joined by a diverse group of performers including JC native Radha, whose powerful pipes blew the judges away on the Voice last year. She didn’t win, but that doesn’t mean a thing when you hear this girl sing. We’re banking on plenty of spine-tingling moments throughout the day. It’s also such an especially empowering time for our community to come together. This year’s theme – in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and WorldPride 2019 – is “Honoring our Past … Creating our Future.” We plan to do just that and to shake our moneymakers as we do it! Last year’s event drew a crowd in excess of 15, 000 and we suspect this year’s number will top that. Hope to find you in the sea of lovely people at Pride!
