Celebrating 50 Years in JC: Torico's Ice Cream
As if we needed an excuse to have ice cream in this sweltering July heat (or anytime, really, but..)…Torico Ice Cream is celebrating their 50th anniversary on Sunday, July 8, from 12-4 pm, with a party at their shop at 20 Erie St.
There will be sweets, treats, prizes and, of course, ice cream. A neighborhood, family-run institution, Torico has been churning out delicious, all-natural homemade ice cream in literally every flavor imaginable long before grass-fed milk/artisanal/hand crafted ice cream and sorbet were common buzz words in the contemporary ice cream business.
There is something for everyone at Torico. Feel like indulging? Try their classic sundae, the Torico Triple Delight, or a sinfully smooth and delicious Milk Shake (our favorite). If you feel like you have been perhaps indulging too much as of late, no problem. Go on the lighter side with a sherbet (who doesn’t love a sherbet!), sorbet, classic Italian ice or a fruit smoothie. There is also frozen yogurt and diet ice cream in 20 flavors to choose from.
A 50-year milestone for a small, family-owned business is a remarkable achievement, especially so in the case of Torico. While Jersey City has developed rapidly in the past decade, rents have increased for business owners, and competition has become fierce as new food establishments (excellent ones, we must add) pop up regularly. The success of Torico, and their ability to stand the test of time and remain successful, is testament to many good things – the quality of their products, the lovely atmosphere and staff, and the loyalty of downtown neighbors to their favorite spots. We’ll be there to celebrate on Sunday – hope to see you too!
