The past few years saw major changes to the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood, with the opening of Berry Lane Park, new residential development, and Liberty Science Center’s massive SciTech Scity Project all pointing to a cultural renaissance in the area.  In the past year alone, a number of excellent new restaurants have drawn diners from all over the City and beyond, laying proof that the emergence of Bergen-Lafayette as an up-and-coming neighborhood is for real.   “When someone tells me they want to open a small business in Jersey and are looking for advice, I actually tell them to think outside of downtown and explore the opportunities in the rest of our City, like Bergen-Lafayette,” explains Rachel Sieg, Executive Director of the Historic Downtown Historic District (check out your conversation with Rachel in this month’s newsletter).  Here’s a roundup of our faves in the buzzy Bergen-Lafayette Food Scene:

Harry’s Daughter, 339 Communipaw

The Bergen-Lafayette couple behind this instantly popular Caribbean-flavored Gastropub spent time in NYC before opening up, working in Negril Village in Manhattan and Pearl’s Bake and Shake in Williamsburg.  Harry’s Daughter has terrific staff, a super tasty menu, full bar, delicious signature rum cocktails, and a fantastic weekend brunch.

The Oak On Pine, 196 Pine St. Owned by the husband and wife team of Samuel and Amanda Kirk, who also own Paulus Hook’s SAM A.M Café, this pretty restaurant offers Classic American comfort food with a distinctly Southern influence.  You can also sign up to attend the Kirks’ supper clubs, which will be held at both restaurants. The Oak on Pine is currently BYOB.

Hooked, 476 Communipaw Ave.  A self-described “local seafood shack”, Hooked brings on the laidback charm with their funky vintage décor and cabin-like feel.  Choose from the fresh catch of the day, chicken or vegetables serves on a po boy, a platter, or with salad. A side of fried pickle chips is a must.
