Move over, Mad Men - Mid-Century Modern in JC

The world has grown increasingly fond of all things Danish. Have you noticed? Articles in major publications routinely cite studies that conclude Danes are the happiest people on earth, that their bike culture should be used as a guide for all others to follow and that hygge is a lifestyle we should all aspire to. Now, ask any Dane what hygge is and they will politely (and happily, of course) explain that the word is not so easy to translate. The general gist of it though we think refers to a lifestyle centered around, well, living. Danes take great effort into the art of living – creating homes that enable serious quality time with loved ones to eat, drink, socialize, chat and just enjoy a really good unhurried hang. But of course…There is no but! We love Danish culture as much as anyone and that includes a part of Denmark’s culture that will always be in style - classic Danish mid-century design. Timeless, beautiful and thoughtfully constructed to enhance life.  And it can be authentically yours right here in Jersey City thanks to the amazing team at Lanoba Design.

Lars, the co-owner of Lanoba (along with his partner David) makes regular sojourns to his native Denmark to source original pieces of hand crafted mid-century modern furniture. This means knocking on doors, working off tips and checking out flea markets. All pieces are then shipped over here to the Lanoba Design Warehouse where they are lovingly refurbished before being priced for sale. That process is all by hand including deep cleaning, sanding, repairing, oiling and staining each piece to honor their survival from their 1950s creation to their current journey to the States. Walking into the warehouse you are greeted by staff who are ready to take you through the provenance of each piece, along with offering different ways to re-use them. I.e., what was once a credenza in a Danish home can now be a bar cart for you. Some of our favorite pieces are the credenzas and smaller bar carts and desks. Lanoba is located in the Lackawanna warehouse on 18th and typically open for walk-in customers on weekends only. But give them a call and you can come in anytime. This is a design aficionados paradise, and it doesn’t hurt it’s run by such a super nice and knowledgeable team. Check it out!
