Shout out to Beloved 2nd Street Bakery
As the cold weather creeps up on us, comfort food is calling. Not just any comfort food mind you, but the authentic Italian American kind, the food that Jersey is famous for. Stuffed breads. Hot sandwiches stuffed with mozzarella, cold cuts, and peppers. You get the idea. So yes, many old-school Italian spots have fallen to the wayside – in Hoboken for example, less than a handful of their famed Italian delis remain. Thankfully, 2nd Street Bakery in JC’s Village neighborhood is still here and still kicking.
Walking into 2nd Street is like walking back in time. There is no fanfare, no website, no social media presence, no peppy yet distracted staff. The woman manning the counter has been doing so for years and is timeless. There is no apple Pay option – it is cash only. Specials are listed on the board but the folks who come here daily – firefighters from the Newark Avenue station, cops, and other locals know exactly what they are ordering. Beyond our beloved stuffed breads (chicken, sausage, pepperoni, broccoli etc.) and the hot heroes, there are cold sandwiches, salads, and mini pizzas.
And with that, as always, we encourage you to explore the many excellent eateries in our beloved City. There is truly something for everyone to eat here, no dietary or culinary choice is left untended. But do not forget that there are times that old-school joints like 2nd Street Bakery is the only thing that will do.
2nd Street Bakery is open Monday – Saturday from 9am – 3pm, and Sunday from 9am – 1pm.
