The Nimbus Nutcracker Returns!
It is a continuing and remarkable journey for Nimbus Dance Works. Now in their 17th season, Nimbus began when Artistic Director Samuel Pott, a former Principal with Martha Graham, had a vision to connect the world of first-class concert dance with diverse cultures and communities across Jersey City. Since its inception, Repertory member of the Company perform works by Pott and other guest choreographers while simultaneously teaching classes at the Nimbus Studio School. Students from across Jersey City of all ages, levels and backgrounds have taken classes at Nimbus’s studio. As part of Sam’s mission, many scholarships have been granted and multiple performance opportunities are offered, culminating with what is now a grand local tradition – the Jersey City Nutcracker! Nimbus Dance will offer 13 performances of the quirky and lovable adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s timeless classic, which takes place in Jersey City and weaves together themes of magic, adventure, family, and friendship.
Company members, students and local guest stars perform against a dazzling backdrop of full-scale sets and fantastical projections of illustrated scenes. Audiences are transported across the city – through parks, lively avenues, deserted alleyways, sewers (for an epic battle scene!) and back to the City Hall, with surprises, cheer, and a message of hope and resilience along the way.
Choreographed by Sam, with animated scenic projections by Jersey City-based video artists, Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger, and a delightful libretto co-written by Alysia Souder and Sam, Jersey City Nutcracker takes audiences on a magical shopping-cart-turned-sleigh-ride with twists and turns the whole family will enjoy!
Debuting in the youth lead roles of Maria and Chris/Christina are Izzy Baculod (McNair High School), Jadyn Mayo (Valley View Middle School), Chelsea Mugambe (High Tech High School), Beta Vino (All Saints Episcopal Day School), & Nola Walker (Snyder High School).
Attendees can expect wholesome (albeit a little wacky!) holiday fun with artisan gift vendors, holiday art market, and more!
After years at various locations throughout the City, The Nutcracker is now presented at the impressive Nimbus Arts Center. It is a 14,900 square foot center with theater, gallery, and studio spaces that is the largest dance-based arts center in the State of New Jersey.
Congratulations to Sam and the entire cast – see you in the audience!
