Throw Tomahawks Hits the Mark!
Yoga. Meditation. Mindfulness. These well-worn ways to wellness have certainly been more useful than ever in the past 12 months. But, like us, have you had a recent moment where what you really wanted to do was hurl an axe into the air? Well, you can. Welcome to the world of Jersey City’s Tomahawks. Located at 7 Sherman Ave. in the Heights, it is the City’s one and only axe-throwing facility. Owner Chris Cotto opened it in 2018, but now seems as good a time as ever to throw down here.
The setup is like that of a bowling alley. There are 14 lanes, each thoughtfully named as an homage to the original inhabitants of New Jersey, the Lenape tribe.
This is an easy activity to dive right into. Each tomahawk axe weighs about 2 pounds, easy to hurl 10 to 15 feet at your wooden target. Guests can book lane for 1 to 2 hours, shared or private. You must show up with closed toe shoes and guests should be 18 years and up, though staff may make exceptions for 16-and 17-year-olds that are accompanied by an adult. Prices are very reasonable - $25 to $35 a visit.
Maybe shooting a bow and arrow is your preferred method of blowing off steam. Cotto is also the proprietor of Jersey City Archery, housed in the same facility. Newcomers begin with a required (thank goodness) Archery 101 class, where you can learn the basics of shooting and safety. Private lessons are also available on an ongoing basis if you want to develop your shooting skills further.
