Baonanas is Everything
Will Baonanas be the next designer dessert to take over the world? Locals Trisha Villanueva and Lloyd Ortuoste, the creative couple behind the tasty treat, are hopeful. “Just like how the Cronut was created in NYC or Bubble Tea in Taiwan, the new way to make dessert was created right here in Jersey City,” Lloyd recently shared. After our first bite of a Baonanas concoction, we are inclined to wholeheartedly agree.
So, what is it exactly? Think of good old classic Southern banana pudding, elevated several notches. The pudding base is whipped into a super light mousse and sandwiched between layers of soft cookie wafers and fruit.
The original (OG) Baonanas is a vanilla mousse layered with super soft wafers and bananas. The mousse itself is made with heavy cream and a secret leche flan recipe. It is sweet but refreshing, filling yet somehow light, kind of indescribably good. From that original creation, many new flavors have been added. The Ubenanas (purple yam mousse) and Buko Pandan Baonanas (coconut and tropical plant) both pay homage to the couples’ Filipino family roots. The S’mores is a sumptuous mix of chocolate mousse, graham crackers, bananas, and marshmallow fluff. We also love the Oreo-filled Cream and Cookies and the Nutella and Walnut flavors, but our absolute favorite is the sublime Lychee-Rose Baonana, with fresh strawberries and lychees.
Before establishing their Monticello Ave. headquarters and second location at Harborside, the Baonanas team built up their brand recognition and clientele via mobile events, catering, and Brooklyn-based pop-up shops. They now offer contact-free delivery and pickup and serve refreshing Filipino coolers and cold-brew coffee alongside their beloved Baoananas, which are served in half-pint and pint containers.
