Independent bookstores are not a thing of the past in Hudson County, for which we are eternally grateful. Jersey City has WORD, Bayonne has The Little Boho Bookshop, and Hoboken has Little City Books.

Since opening in 2015, Little City Books quickly became a neighborhood institution.  Owners Donna Garban and Kate Jacobs have a professed love of books and local community in equal measure, and that positive vibe is imparted as well by the super helpful staff at the store.

Pre-Covid, Little City operated as a two-tier book shop with one floor dedicated to adult books, and an annex devoted to books for kids.

The annex is currently closed, with most kids’ books moved to the first floor.  The shop is open to limited capacity for browsing, or you can pre-order your books in advance for a quick pick up.

Little City Books used to host an impressive number of literary events and book signings in the store which is, by the way, charming and airy. While we wait for such things to be back in action, Little City is beginning to host events outdoors as well. Youngish readers in your midst might enjoy an in-person Storytime and book signing on Saturday, May 8. Author Raakhee Mirchandani will read an excerpt from new book Hair Twins. Books can be purchased at the reading or pre-ordered at the store’s website. The event will be held at 11am at Church Square Park, located at 5th and Garden in Hoboken.
