Last October, the Greenville Branch of the JC Public Library was renamed the Earl A. Morgan Branch in honor of the revered JC journalist and activist who passed away earlier in the year at age 75. We were big fans of his writing and reporting in the Jersey Journal and had the pleasure of speaking with him with a few times.  Mr. Morgan himself was a lifelong resident of Jersey City and in the tributes that followed his passing, we learned that since childhood, Mr. Morgan spent a great deal of time at both the Miller and Greenville library branches, including significant time spent at The Afro-American Historical and Cultural Society Museum. The Museum is located on the second floor of the Greenville Branch now rededicated in his name.  We highly recommended a visit to this culturally and historically rich institution.

The museum was conceived in the late 1970’s by a committee devoted to research and to collecting, preserving and exhibiting items of cultural and historic significance to the African-American community. This is the only museum of its kind in the State of New Jersey, and it’s been in its current home in Greenville since 1984.

The Museum’s permanent collection features historical information about New Jersey citizens of African-American descent, along with a display of African artifacts.  The collection includes publications, personal documents, photographs and memorabilia. Visit and learn about the slave trade and the Underground Railroad in New Jersey, The Civil Rights Movement, the New Jersey Branch of the NAACP, and more. There are also genealogical records for people researching their family history. The Museum also conducts tours of historic sites in Hudson County and organizes special events to celebrate the contributions of African Americans.
