Chilltown 101 from Alex Gulino

We want to spread some love about a lovely gift we received last month. “Jersey City – The Real Chilltown” is a terrific collection of photos and essays by local photographer Alex Gulino.

A seasoned photographer and three-time author, Alex has shown her striking photos across New Jersey and recently in Brooklyn at Greenpoint Gallery. She is drawn to the beauty of ravaged and abandoned buildings and overlooked, overgrown landscapes. Her first two books, “Empire State of Decay: Discarded New York and Garden State of Decay: Discarded New Jersey,” reflect her passion for finding beauty in unexpected places.

With “Jersey City – The Real Chilltown,” Gulino shifts her focus on Jersey City, lovingly photographing the parks, buildings, churches, homes, and people that make up the second largest City in New Jersey. In her accompanying essays, she ponders the past, present and future of this town; “As new skyscrapers are erected, is there still room in this urban landscape for homes that are nearly 300 years old? Can its booming art scene make Jersey City the new Brooklyn? As the past meets the present, come see the people and the visuals of Chilltown and the vibrancy that is the incomparable Jersey City.”
