Don’t Sleep on El Gordo

This month, we are spreading love towards some tasty restaurants in Jersey City that have a potential blink-and-you-might-miss factor, be it their location, signage, etc. One such place is El Gordo, a Peruvian restaurant in the Heights that is open for lunch and dinner. A quick drive/walk-by of El Gordo could lead one to think it was some unexceptional chain restaurant. Well, there are 3 El Gordos all of which are in New Jersey – JC, Passaic and Union to be exact, and they are all great.

Peruvian cuisine is celebrated for its unique fusion of indigenous ingredients and influences from Spanish, African, and Asian culinary traditions. Some of the most iconic dishes served at El Gordo are the Pollo a la Brasa – a slow-roasted rotisserie chicken marinated in Peruvian spices, the Ceviche, and the Lomo Saltado – a hearty dish of stir-fry beef and vegetables. This is a family run business with recipes passed down generationally. That it is here and thriving in JC – the most diverse city in the Country after all – only makes the food taste all the better.
