Fawning Over Mela Fleur
Have you checked out the beautiful, dried flower arrangements at Hoboken’s Mela Fleur? If we correctly suspect a bit of pause on your end, trust us. These are not your grandmother’s dried flower arrangements. Unlike traditional aged flowers that dry to a brittle and discolored finish (which can be rustic and lovely), preserved flowers are cut at the peak of health and then soaked for a time in silica. The resulting flowers are soft, flexible and retain much of their original beauty.
We loved the large dramatic stems at Milla Fleur such as the palest-ever pink hydrangea and lovely soft ferns. Both do very well in the preserving process as do all plants that that thrive in low-moisture environments, owner Melissa “Mel” Diaz explained. And perhaps the greatest thing about preserved stems – their longevity. At first glance here, the arrangements may sound pricy, but these are beyond just beautiful. Not only are they natural and sustainable, these flowers will last up to a year at minimum.
Flowers can be purchased as handheld arrangements (priced from $30 -$100 in petite, small, medium or large sizes. You can also buy them inside one of the shop’s unique, pretty vases (priced from $55 to $175). Another lovely option – bring in your vase from home and have it filled at a 15 % discount.
Mela Fleur does custom arrangements for personal and commercial clients and events. Be sure to drop in and visit the charming space. In closing, we must mention that Hoboken is spoiled with the number of fabulous florists and flower shops they pack in their one square mile, and they are lucky to have Mela Fleur join the ranks.
