Guatemalan Gem on Pacific

We love Bergen Lafayette’s Café Quetzal. Located next to the Lafayette Branch of the Jersey City Public Library on Pacific, this sunny family-owned restaurant flies quietly under the radar (no website or social media) and we love that old school vibe. This lovely little Café can safely rely on the strength of its delicious authentic Guatemalan dishes and desserts.

Our favorite dishes and small plates include the pupusas – super thick and fluffy warm tortillas stuffed with cheese, pork, or veg. We also love the triple tostada – three crispy fried tortillas stacked with avocado, cheese, black bean puree and pico de gallo. Of course, there are many meat-centered dishes like the Carne Asada and Churrasquito Chapin – two steak plates served with tortillas, rice and beans, salad, and plantains. Speaking of plantains. Café Quetzal serves Mexican-style tacos with chicken or beef, but you must try the vegan tacos here. Black bean puree, avocado and the most delicious soft plantains are stuffed in multiple layers of soft taco shells that keeps these delectable savory tacos from falling apart.

This café also makes their own fresh desserts including guava and cheese pastries, cakes, cupcakes, and breads. Also check out the rotating Guatemalan style hot rice and oatmeal drinks. We really love this quiet gem of a spot and bet you will too.
