Quiet Japanese Gem in Paulus Hook

Honshu is a quiet-ish modern Japanese restaurant in Paulus Hook. Situated on the second floor of a Greene St. storefront, it can be easily missed by passersby. However please trust us. It is well worth visiting for a flavorful meal amplified with lovely service.

Honshu is open for lunch and dinner. They have lunch specials, a private dining room and an Omakase menu. It is a fun situation to watch the sushi being prepared in the main dining area. But the single most important thing is to come here to taste their food which is so fresh and so clean.

These are our favorite dishes. The Beef Nagumaki is essentially Asian meatballs prepared with very thinly sliced beef. The texture and flavor make this such an amazing sharing plate. The Godzilla Roll might be the best roll we have ever tasted – a perfectly mushy combo of eel, tuna and crab. The sashimi roll of fresh cod, yellowtail and tuna also blew our minds. And then there is our favorite – the amazingly tender Octopus roll with rice and a thin seaweed strip.

Honshu’s wonky website and IG are no indication of how great the food is. Best to just forgo your phone and visit in person.
