Nothing but Love for Journal Square Lounge

Simply put, Journal Square Lounge is a perfect bar. Formerly the home of the beloved Journal Square Pub, the space was passed on from owner Joseph Barone to two other Jersey City natives, Sebastian and Frank Cupo. They’ve retained the friendly, all-are-welcome vibe while creating some splashy new design elements (love the disco ball!), amazing craft cocktails and a fantastic food menu, courtesy of Hooked’s Tory Aunspach.

Ok, so drinks first. There are 10 signature cocktails, all equally tantalizing. That said, we must point out the wonders of the Smoking Hot Mule, a dangerously smooth concoction made with Mezcal, agave syrup, bitters and Goslings ginger beer. On the somewhat lighter side, we’re nuts for the Summer in the City, a refreshing blend of Tito’s Vodka, St. Germain and lemon, with a rinse of rose water. We also adore the Square’s Revivor, made with Jersey’s own Corgi Pembroke Gin, Cointreau, Lillet Blanc and lemon juice, served in an absinthe-rinsed glass. Not feeling so adventurous? Fear not. The bar also serves every classic cocktail you can think of, all perfectly executed by the seasoned and knowledgeable staff. A great selection of wine and beers round out the list of drinks to choose from.

Now, on to food. The kitchen is open daily from 11am – 1am and has it all. This is bar food on another level. Small bites to start include deviled eggs, olives served warm with fresh herbs and bread, fresh shucked oysters and wild caught gulf shrimp. Looking to share? The charcuterie plate changes daily but always includes a fine selection of cured meats, cheeses, fruit and bread. Another great sharing option is the so-not-your-average chicken wings. They are prepared six different ways, with a variety of sauces, and are made fresh to order. On the entrée side, there is a great mix of salads, sliders and paninis to be had.

To top it off, JSQ Lounge has a daily happy hour from 3pm – 7pm, with ½ price wings, $1 oysters and drink specials including $5 Old Fashioneds and Manhattans.

Like Journal Square itself, JSQ Lounge represents everything great about JC. A creative and welcoming space that sticks to its roots. See you at happy hour!
