Virile Leads the Barbershop Trend
As any culture vulture knows, what was old and cool (either ironically or actually) will eventually re-emerge in popular culture. Needlepoint. Sewing. Baking. And of course, the old-style men’s barbershop. This is not a super-new trend – in 2010, barbershops with vintage flair (think brass fixtures and 19th Century-era chairs) popped up across unofficial urban centers for cool (Lower Manhattan, hello). At this same time in NJ, the same cool vibe had effortlessly popped up thanks to Barber extraordinaire Adam Ramos. The son of a barber mom, he was seriously obsessed with the cuts and culture of the old barbershop. He opened his first Virile barbershop in Waldwick in 2010. Jersey City was next. Now there are five Virile barbershops in NJ including two here – the original at 510 Jersey Ave. and a second outpost at 423 Monmouth. What a lovely new era for modern day gentlemen – a place in this busy world where one is encouraged to sit and chat, salon style, with a glass of whiskey or ale offered to aid in relaxation.
Among their most popular treatments is the the Hot Towel Shave. This hour-long experience consists of two passes with a straight blade (barber talk, just go with it), four hot towels, a cold towel, an after-shave massaging application finished off with a shoulder massage. As you can surmise this is ideally for men looking to completely remove facial hair. Not you? No prob. Moving back to modern trends – the long beard has seen a resurgence during this COVID era. Rest assured you can still get that thing trimmed. Or leave it alone and focus instead on a super high-end haircut. Or both. And for the parents out there, we also know several young guys who come here for a kids cut. Males of all ages leave happy and looking dashing.
So, one more thing -Virile has product! Good product. That includes 3 pomades under the brand Hearth and Heritage that cater to your specific hair goals. The products as well as the services and Ramos himself have been featured on Good Morning America and in countless publications including Men’s Health, American Salon and GQ.
Gentlemen, treat yourselves. It’s been a trying couple of years – you deserve it.
