Coles St. Park Opens

It’s official! Coles St. Park is now open to the public. This follows the very recent ribbon cutting ceremony with the Mayor, Council and City officials, community members and Manhattan Building Company, the local developers who funded the construction of this $2.5 million project. Located on Coles St. near the Hoboken border, the Park’s 1.5 acres extend from 16th to 18th Streets. Park features include 5000 sq. feet of playground area and swings, comprehensive flood mitigation, new and mature plantings, public art spaces, dog runs, security and lighting. A triple-tiered 750 sq. foot amphitheater is in the works for Phase 2 of the project and will be home to live concerts and other community events.

The Park is such a welcome and needed addition to this neighborhood. Referred to by the Park’s developers and others as Soho West, this area of Downtown, so visible with its proximity to the Holland Tunnel, Newport and Hamilton Park, lay dormant for years until about a decade back when developers started building here. Speaking of Hamilton Park, dog owners in this nearby neighborhood are especially grateful for the timing of the Park’s opening, as the Small and Big Dog Runs there are both currently closed for renovation.
