Komegashi Too Still Going Strong

There are two new Asian eateries on Washington Boulevard in Newport. Menya Sendaime is a Jersey-based Japanese Ramen chain with 5 locations in total including Old Bridge, Paramus and 2 restaurants in Fort Lee. Chef Tan serves Hunan-, Szechuan- and American-style Chinese specialties. These new additions nicely round out the Asian food options in this area, with neighboring Sushi restaurant Komegashi Too right around the corner.

It is a nostalgic favorite of ours. Komegashi opened in Jersey City in the early 2000s. This was well before Jersey City was such an established foodie destination and, some could argue, a destination at all. Hard to imagine now but just two short decades ago it took some persuasion to get friends on the PATH to visit. Komegashi was quite often the compromise for a meal, with its proximity to the station. But of course, Komegashi was anything but a compromise. The food was and is excellent and on top of that, the simple yet elegant dining room boasts such beautiful views of the NYC skyline. Even DOMODOMO, the widely lauded (justifiably so) and hyper-inventive Japanese restaurant farther down the waterfront in Harborside can’t claim that water view.

We headed back recently for a long lunch with visiting friends (who didn’t need to be pushed this time around) and the food was wonderful. We love the steamed pork dumplings, the house salad with ginger dressing, and of course the super-fresh and tasty sushi. Our favorite special plate is the Chicken Mikado with rice or mashed potatoes (we choose rice, always). Komegashi has an extensive selection of sake and a full-service bar as well. We may be spoiled for choice these days on the culinary front, but it’s always nice to revisit an old faithful!
