Contemporary Cocktails, Classic Italian & More

In a city with no shortage of first-rate Italian restaurants, Luna Restaurant and Bar has managed to carve out their own niche, since opening last April in the former home of Park And 6th (279 Grove St.)  The companion restaurant to Rutherford’s beloved Paisano’s, Luna carries over many of their classic, crave-worthy Italian dishes, but also adds some distinctly non-Italian offerings. What makes the menu cohesive is the level of craft brought to every dish.

Of all the homemade pastas, the Pappardelle is our favorite, prepared with a classic Bolognese (why mess with perfection?).  Need a break from pasta? Luna has you covered, with a diverse menu that reflects the JC demographic. Among our favorites are the Coconut Shrimp, Cajun Calamari, and the Churrasco – skirt steak served with chimichurri sauce and outrageously good truffle fries.  There’s also plenty of great salads to choose from if you are feeling less indulgent and/or want to save room for the amazing, accomplished cocktails, which alone are worth a visit and very reasonably priced, to boot.

Each of the 9 specialty cocktails deserves praise, first off.  But among our go-to’s: the Jersey City Sour, made with Bulleit Whiskey, amaretto, lemon and topped with cabernet.  The Bad Apple is the perfect autumnal libation, made with Misunderstood Whiskey, freshly-juiced Red Delicious apple, and served with a roasted cinnamon stick.  Another apple-based favorite: The St. Germaine N’ Juice – made with vodka or gin, St. Germaine, and freshly-made Granny Smith apple juice.  We also love the Café Racer – with Vodka, Kahlua, vanilla and espresso, it’s a tasty meal in itself (but probably best to have something to nosh on with this smooth yet powerful martini).

We are also big fans of Luna’s happy hour, which runs from 4pm – 7pm, offering discounted drinks and starters. See you at the bar sometime soon!
