Free Kayaking on the Hudson
A stalwart group of Hudson River enthusiasts maintain that the water is fine to swim in as long as you take certain precautions. While we aren’t exactly on board with that as of yet, we do love spending time on the River and kayaking is a fun way to do this while also getting in a semi-chill workout. Thanks to the Hudson Community Boathouse in Hoboken, you can kayak the Hudson at no cost.
This nonprofit offers free kayaking and paddleboarding out of their Hoboken Cove. This summer marks the Boathouse’s 19th year in operation and their all-volunteer team has led more than 6000 paddlers out on the water. No experience is necessary but here are some useful to tips to know before you go:
-There is no age minimum, but children must have an adult guardian and for those under 16, they must paddle in a double kayak with said guardian. Fun fact – your doggies are invited too!
-All equipment is provided.
-You’ll check in at the front desk to pick up your life jacket (mandatory) and then head to the beach for a quick how-to session before you head out. Also be prepared to get wet while kayaking and bring some quick dry clothing if you can. Small lockers are available to house your valuables.
-Here is the link to the schedule of free kayaking sessions: https://sites.google.com/hobokencoveboathouse.org/hccb/free-paddle-days. You are welcome to just walk up during these times or you can reserve a spot in exchange for a $10 donation. On the website, the reservation slots are released four days before each paddle day. If no times are shown when you click on the booking page, that likely means all spots for the day have already been booked.
