Jane Doe is on Newark

Have you found Jane Doe yet? The chic, unique restaurant opened on downtown Newark Ave. in late August. The menu is a fusion of Italian and Japanese cuisines. The vibe is Japanese speakeasy replete with sexy lighting and a music-centered environment. Staff spin a rotating selection of vinyl nightly from the high-fidelity sound system and stacks of LPs adorn the custom rounded shelves.

If the idea of Italian-Japanese fusion sounds familiar to you, you are likely thinking of pastaRAMEN (we were). It is the super-popular Italian Ramen shop in Montclair, self-billed as the very first of its kind. Jane Doe has its own spin on the marriage of these cuisines, reflected in starters like the Meatball Yakitori, the Octopus Carpaccio and the Six Minute Egg, which is a soft-boiled egg marinated in soy balsamic and wrapped in prosciutto and rosemary salt. The six pasta dishes also blend flavors distinct to these cuisines. The Rigatoni plates mirin and soy pork sausage with ricotta, balsamic, scallions and breadcrumbs.

Many of the crazy inventive cocktails are infused or made solely with Japanese spirits. These drinks are totally worth coming for, with or without eats. Plus, the bar scene is fun. Special shout out to the Lupe – made with mezcal, passion fruit, chili, sake, ayuuk (a smoky Danish spirit) and lemon, and the Bianca – Japanese whiskey, gin, peach, lemon, basil and the Spanish aperitif Bonanto.  The creativity at Jane Doe is flowing freely and we are sure many memorable nights are in store. For adults only, that is – Jane Doe is 21+.
