Klado Owner Says Goodbye to Wall Street, Hello to Hamilton Park
Growing up in Brazil, Jen Prado savored Brigadeiros every moment she could. The Brazilian-style truffles were a focal point to every celebratory meal’s dessert platter. After moving to America, her mother began sending boxes of them to her once a year and eventually passed on her recipe so Jen could enjoy them year-round. After Jen’s husband had his first taste of a Brigadeiro, he became equally obsessed. Soon after, a new business idea took shape. The traditional recipe consists of condensed milk, cocoa powder and butter topped with chocolate sprinkles. Jen started experimenting with the recipe, refining it, and adding bold new flavor combinations. She took her treats to a local food market and instantly sold out.
At the same time, Jen was growing increasingly unfulfilled with her Wall Street job. With the support of her husband, she took the plunge, even appearing on the Discovery Channel’s “I Quit”, a series that follows six entrepreneurs who leave their 9 to 5 and start their own business.
The treats are prettily packaged and sold in boxes of 12, for 29.95 plus free shipping to anywhere in the 50 States. The Chocoholic Box is a mix of double chocolate, s’mores, and spicy chocolate. The Juice Box is made up of Coconut, Peach and Strawberry flavored Brigadeiros. The Pie Box is a Fall Special – 6 each of apple-and pumpkin-pie truffles. There are plenty more fun flavors like Unicorn Meat- cake-batter with sprinkles and rainbow marshmallows.
The business is 100% vegetarian, gluten- and nut-free, and each Brigadeiro clocks in at under 100 calories. You can order through their website casaklado.com, or pop in the shop at 232.5 Pavonia Ave. They are currently open Thursday – Saturday from 2pm – 8pm, and Sundays from 12pm – 4pm.
