Metro Market’s a Hidden Gem, Jersey City

If you are zipping by the Cast Iron Lofts on Jersey Ave., in that area way west of Hamilton Park that some refer to as SOHO West (South of Hoboken, West of…oh never mind), you may have passed by Metro Market. Also known as Your Coffee Break and no we don’t get the two names either but.

It is ground floor retail next to Hudson Speed (an indoor training facility for under-21 athletes) and the bar/lounge/restaurant Jersey Social.

And it is great!  Yes, the garish green awning, fluorescent lighting and CVS-style stocked shelves of groceries and sundries make it look like a place you only stop at if needed. Yes, they have stocked shelves of necessities for residents in these buildings without handy access to a grocery or pharmacy. Well, those shelves are stocked really, really well.  Trust us. But the big surprise?
The drink and food!

They serve Starbucks Coffee and make the range of barista-style drinks. They have a full range of healthy and freshly made juices, smoothies and bowls. They have paninis, salads, sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, omelets, and quesadillas, burritos and huevos rancheros.

We ordered the huevos rancheros for a quick breakfast and are compelled to tell you how very fresh, seasoned and delicious they were, with the freshest avocado and corn tortillas deliciously drowned in Pico de gallo. Which was not a surprise to us as we watched the care that went into making them. The lovely manager came out to confirm what we already tasted – all the Mexican dishes are authentically prepared. Jersey City remains a funny place where you will get the most authentic and good grub in every corner, including the ground floor of a new construction building.

Check it out!
