Mexican American Vegan Food in the Heights

Vegan AF brings not only a cheeky title but seriously satisfying eats to 291 Central Ave. The Ecuadorian-born couple behind this new spot cleverly bring together the healthy desire for a plant-based diet with the evergreen craving for Mexican American comfort food. They opened in March and we give our hats off to them for being yet another awesome set of entrepreneurial restaurateurs in JC who have found a way to open in 2020.

Perhaps the secret is finding your niche, knowing what people want and just going for it. The Vegan AF burritos are stuffed with house-made pico de gallo, avocado, garlic, beans and five plant-based proteins for customers to select from. There is chili, tacos, nachos, and quesadillas, all topped with a satisfying vegan cheese.

The signature burgers are excellent – all ten of them. The new brands of meat-free burgers like Impossible and Beyond Burger are really good, and you can try either of them here. Or you can choose home-made burgers (one spicy and one more savory with sweet apples). Whichever you choose, there are a ton of toppings to choose from and all come with a nice portion of thin and crispy fries.

And then there is breakfast, like the delicious tofu scramble and the pancakes. The vegan brunch platter adds a Mexican-style vegan quesadilla to the mix. Yummy drinks to complement any meal include a big range of flavored bubble teas, coffees and espressos, and homemade sodas, lemonade, and smoothies.

Vegan AF is currently open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00AM-8:00PM and on Sundays from 10:00AM-6:00PM. Check it out!
