Much Love, Alfalfa

Are we the last to have eaten at Alfalfa? The happiest salad shop in Hoboken is our new obsession. When we recently entered its’ beautiful blush-colored walls for the first time, the feel-good California vibes jumped out at us. We had heard from a friend that they have a thriving business in Santa Monica and naturally assumed the owners were from Cali. Wrong. The four entrepreneurs behind this business are Hoboken natives, graduates of St. Peters Prep and lifelong friends. They left their corporate career designations in search of finding work that molded their passions for connecting with people and promoting joy. Yes, this business is based on the desire to promote joy and mental health. They started by operating at the Hoboken Farmer’s Market, moved on to a pop-up shop and settled into their brick-and-mortar store in 2019. P.S. The Santa Monica store opened in 2021.

Ok so the food. The main aspect of the business is a fantastic range of salads – hearty, healthy and filling salads. We tried and loved the Laguna - their signature lettuce blend with queso blanco, corn, tomato, cukes, red onion and a lime cilantro dressing topped with blue tortilla chips. Also loved the Greek Salad – upped a notch or five from the traditional with adds of quinoa, garbanzo beans and a truly delicious lemon herb vinaigrette. There are plenty more salads to peruse and choose from. If ordering ahead you can check them all out online but may we suggest also lingering on their social media in general for the positive and uplifting feeling it imparts? So yes the salads are fab but interestingly the two breakfast burritos – one with sausage and one vegetarian – are both making a big splash. They are both served all day and are making many Best of Lists coast to coast.

In short, we love this place. Oh, and we forgot to mention the doughnuts! The doughnuts. A glorious mixture of fancy and colorful doughnuts flavored with things like thyme and lavender. Ok we have said enough. Eat here!
