Shop Local at 14th St. Garden Center
Gardens throughout Jersey City are in beautiful bloom, which reminds us to shout out 14th Street Garden Center. This family-run business has been in operation for 26 years and while it is a local gem, it may also be a hidden one for newer residents. The store is tucked away in an industrial stretch of downtown - near the entrances/exits to the Holland Tunnel and Routes 78 and 1/9. Inside, it is an oasis of pottery, planters, fresh cut flowers and meticulously maintained indoor and outdoor plants. Whatever the size and/or scope of your gardening plans, this shop is the perfect place to explore the possibilities.
We love the quirky small planters – like the skeleton head planter and the white ceramic pots with geometric designs. They work beautifully inside (or out), and 14th St.’s selection of indoor plants is top-rate. The staff is super-helpful and knowledgeable about which plants work best where and how much upkeep is required for success. There is also a lovely selection of succulents and hanging indoor baskets. 14th St. has a gorgeous selection of high-end large and extra-large planters, which you will see on display in many front gardens throughout the City.
All the outdoor plants are meticulously maintained. We find that makes such a significant difference when transporting them to your own space. There is a nice variety of popular, easy-care annuals that thrive in our local climate. There’s plenty for shady gardens (inpatients, begonias, coleus, etc.) and sunny ones (geraniums, petunias, vinca, etc.) and lots of lovely sunpatients, which thrive in any outdoor environment and give a great burst of color all summer season long. There is also a large mix of pre-planted hanging baskets and containers.
Our favorite plant purchases – the ones that keep on giving – are the perennial flowers, shrubs, and trees, including the hydrangeas and Japanese maples you see all over JC. 14th St. also has a stunning supply of tropical plants. We love the Jasmine, with its sweet heady scent. Also lovely-smelling and eminently practical is the fine selection of locally grown herbs.
